BEHIND THE BRAND: A Q&A WITH STEPHANIE MURRAY ON BUSINESS, COMMUNITY & WHAT’S NEXT

Stephanie Murray, founder of Stephanie Murray Mortgages (SMM), recently reflected on her journey in a candid podcast chat, Lemon Drops, with Anna Richardson from Smokeylemon . From bold leaps to building a values-led business and giving back to the community, here's what she had to say.

Q: Let’s go back to the beginning. How did SMM start?

It’s hard to believe it’s been around nine years now! Starting SMM was something I had planned for a long time. I knew I needed a solid foundation first—experience in more than one bank, strong performance as a Mobile Mortgage Manager (MMM), and a great reputation with my clients and referral partners.

More than that, I wanted to have lived experience—buying property, investing, understanding what it feels like to be in the client’s position. All of this helped me build confidence and integrity, which I knew were essential before launching SMM.

Q: Was there a secret to launching successfully?

There’s no secret—just a strong belief in surrounding yourself with people you trust. You're only as fabulous as your team, especially when they’re spread out across the country. Many of our team members had known each other for over 10 years before joining SMM.

We all share the same values. I’ve always had the mindset of just do it. Jump. Take the leap. What’s the worst that can happen?

Q: What’s been key to your business growth over the years?

Listening. Truly listening. Often, people don’t even know exactly what they need—but with experience, you can pick up on the cues and help guide them. Knowledge is power, and having the confidence to apply that knowledge in every situation has been a huge part of our growth.

Q: You’ve become known not just for mortgages, but for community giving. How did that start?

It began with a walk in Waikanae about nine years ago. I remember saying to Mum, “I’m going to do a charity golf day to help the community.” That was the beginning of the SMM Charity Golf Tournament.

Soon after the first event, I knew we needed to do more. That’s when the SMM Noir Blanc Progressive Dinner was born—to involve our amazing New Plymouth hospitality scene and create a second major event every year. We just did it. That’s always been the approach.

Q: What keeps those charity events going strong?

Tenacity! We pushed through COVID and made sure every event was an unforgettable night for guests. We also promote every business that donates, showcasing them to the wider community. It’s not just about raising funds—it’s about lifting each other up.

Q: How do these events tie into your values and business mission?

They reflect our vision: that success means more than just growing a business. It’s about helping people—whether that’s guiding them to homeownership, providing a safe, warm place to live, or supporting landlords who are doing the right thing.

It also shows that businesses don’t have to be all about profit. Every business can give back. We’re proof of that.

Q: What’s been the biggest leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Reflect before you act. That’s a big one. With experience, I’ve learned that solutions come from reflection, not just reaction.

Also, knowledge is everything. I speak with confidence because I’ve seen so much—both professionally and personally. There’s not much I haven’t encountered!

Q: What do clients need most from you and your team?

To know we care. Their goals are always at the front of our minds. They need to feel heard and supported, especially in a world where lending can feel intimidating or complex.

Q: Tell us about your involvement with TPIA and property investors.

TPIA gives me a platform to connect with investors and stay in touch with the broader property market across New Zealand.

I work with long-term property investors all over the country, and I absolutely love helping them, whether they’re seasoned or just starting out. Mentoring has also been a great way to reflect on how far we’ve come and how different people navigate challenges. It pushes me to think outside the square.

Q: What’s next for SMM?

Expansion! We’re looking at acquiring new books, continuing to support our amazing team’s wellbeing, and growing our customer base. Most importantly, we want to ensure that as we grow, our community continues to benefit from our success.
